How to protect wood finishes in Winter

Winter brings with it wet shoes, muddy paws and lots more time spent indoors. For wooden floors, furniture and your beautifully decorated floors, that can mean extra wear just when you want your home or business looking its best.

To protect wood finishes in Winter, start by checking the existing coating and compatibility, cleaning and preparing the surface, and choosing a varnish from the Polyvine range suited to the job. Apply it in the right conditions, allow it to cure, and keep up a simple cleaning routine throughout the colder months.

At Polyvine, we develop and manufacture our specialist varnishes and coatings here in the UK. From hardworking floors to much-loved furniture, our range helps you protect the finish you have worked hard to achieve.

Start with a Winter maintenance check

Before reaching for a brush or roller, take a closer look at the surfaces that work hardest. Hallways, entrances, dining tables and kitchen cabinets are good places to start.

Look for scratches, worn patches, lifting or peeling coatings or exposed wood. A current finish in good condition may simply need careful cleaning. A damaged finish may need preparation and recoating before it can provide reliable protection again.

Check for dampness too. You’ll find this around doors and windows, and if found, deal with the source of water ingress or condensation before coating. Varnish should always be applied to a suitably dry and prepped surface.

Protect wooden floors from Winter foot traffic

Wet footwear and grit can be hard on wooden floors. A durable coating helps protect the surface, while a little ongoing everyday care helps it last.

Polyvine Heavy Duty Floor Varnish provides a tough, clear finish for interior floors, with chemical and abrasion resistance and resistance to black heel marks. Available in satin and dead flat, it is a useful choice for wooden floors in homes, hotels, restaurants and other busy interiors.

For more demanding projects, 2K-POLY86 is our professional two-pack water-based polyurethane varnish. Supplied with a separate hardener, it offers high resistance to wear, chemicals and heavy traffic on wooden floors and interior timber surfaces, with added UV protection.

Whether you are maintaining a hallway or planning a floor refurbishment project, choose the coating around the surface and the level of use it needs to withstand.

how to protect wood finishes during winter

Give furniture and interior woodwork lasting protection

Interior tables, cabinets and shelving often get more use during the Winter months, particularly when entertaining or spending more time at home.

Polyvine Heavy Duty Varnish is designed for interior wood surfaces that need tough protection against high wear, chemicals, cleaning agents, alcohol and oils. Its clear finish makes it a practical option for furniture, doors, kitchen cabinets and other hardworking woodwork.

For surfaces needing a particularly high level of protection and added UV resistance, Interior Extreme Varnish offers resistance to water, stains, heat and chemicals. Suitable applications include interior wood, furniture and other demanding surfaces.

Both products are available in satin and dead flat finishes, so you can choose the look that suits your project. Continue using coasters and protective mats, and wipe up spills promptly to help preserve the finish.

Remember painted and decorative finishes

Winter maintenance goes beyond bare wood. Painted surfaces and wallpaper in busy rooms can also benefit from added protection.

Decorators Varnish®️ is a clear water-based coating that helps protect emulsion paint, wallpaper and other suitable decorative surfaces against finger marks, stains and scuffing.

It is particularly useful where you want to preserve a decorative finish while making it more durable. Always test first to check compatibility and the finished appearance, especially over pale colours or delicate wallpaper.

Prepare properly before applying varnish

Good preparation gives your chosen coating the best chance to perform.

Remove dust, dirt, grease, wax, polish and other contamination.

Assess the existing finish and remove loose or failing material.

Sand where required by the product instructions, then remove sanding dust thoroughly.

Check compatibility with any existing paint, stain or coating.

Apply to a small test area before starting the full project.

Recoating an existing finish needs particular care. If you are unsure what is already on the surface, speak to our team before applying a new varnish.

Can you apply water-based varnish in Winter?

Yes, provided the application and drying conditions meet the requirements of the product.

A cold room, garage or workshop needs checking before work begins. For example, Polyvine Heavy Duty Varnish and Heavy Duty Floor Varnish should not be applied below 8°C or above 30°C. Check the current Technical Data Sheet for the product you are using, and maintain suitable conditions while the coating dries.

Allow time between coats and before returning the surface to use. Touch-dry does not mean fully cured, and colder conditions can extend drying and curing times. Avoid heavy use or cleaning until the coating has reached the stage specified in its instructions.

Store products according to the label guidance, protecting them from extremes of temperature.

Keep Winter cleaning simple

A good finish deserves good aftercare. Sweep or vacuum grit regularly, wipe up water and spills promptly, and use suitable entrance mats to reduce the dirt brought indoors.

Polyvine FLOORCLEAN PRO is a concentrated cleaner developed for the routine maintenance of finished hard floors, including varnished timber.

Follow its dilution and application instructions alongside the flooring and coating manufacturer’s recommendations. Use a well-wrung mop or cloth where required, and avoid excessive water: even a protected wooden floor needs careful cleaning.

Winter wood protection: frequently asked questions

Which Polyvine varnish should I use for an indoor wooden floor?

Heavy Duty Floor Varnish is designed for durable protection on interior floors. For demanding professional projects involving high traffic, consider 2K-POLY86. The right choice depends on the timber, existing finish and intended use.

Can I achieve a durable dead flat finish?

Yes. Follow the coating system specified for your chosen product. For Heavy Duty Varnish and Heavy Duty Floor Varnish, Polyvine recommends two coats of satin followed by one coat of dead flat for high durability.

Will varnish protect wood from standing water?

A suitable varnish improves resistance to everyday exposure, but standing water should still be removed promptly. Follow the product’s limits of use and address leaks or dampness before coating.
